Anybody here saving their spent GFO?

As the title states. If you're just saving it and not sure what to do with it. I'd like to take it off your hands and see if I can regenerate it.

Thanks, if it works it sounds like it can be recharged 10 - 20 maybe 30 times and be as effective as when it was new. Since its one of the larger regular monthly expenses we could all save a lot of dough if it works.

I had no idea it could be regenerated... I have been saving DI resin in hopes of someday having enough to regen. I guess 1 issue I have is that I mix my GFO with Carbon. I should start running it separate so I can save it.

I may be wrong David -- but is the performance the same? I did not think it was. That';s why the regenerated that you can buy is cheaper...

My reading suggests that it is 100% or nearly that much. Certainly not worth tossing it out for new, it costs pennies to regenerate it.

I wont feel bad if people decide to keep their's and try it for themselves. I think most were like me and probably just tossed it anyway.

I do toss mine but will stop doing that -- it is yours. I also wonder about the media in canister filters -- can that be regenerated -- it's only pieces of clay and rock ...

Cool...
Anyone - just be sure to wear protection when working with Sodium Hydroxide. It is highly caustic and will burn skin and can blind you if ever got in an eye.
I will post a formula for "AnythingX" in another topic. It also has NaOH.

Good point Joe. Sodium Hydroxide is commonly called Caustic Lye.

Granular Ferric Oxide is an iron based phosphate binder. You use it somewhere in your tank/sump to absorb and reduce phosphates.

I've got some old GFO for you Dave. Probably 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound.
